Glorius Victory over Nowton
Nowton 112 all out
J Walker 35,Waites 25,
Richards 3wickets 4 runs, Gwatkin 2 for 23, Melville-Ross 2 for 25
HCCC 113 for 6
Roberts 34, Hodge 27,
HCCC Won by 4 Wickets.
With a wet out field and damp pitch the toss was an important one to win to which Captain Roberts duly did win and decided to put Nowton into bat.
With Hannan and Hodge opening the bowling and keeping a very tight line the Nowton players soon realized that runs were a premium on a wet outfield and got off to a slow but steady start and with a couple of drop catches got to 38 before Walton took a running catch to dismiss Merton for 14.
A partnership of 35 between J Walker and Waites got the total to 62 before J Walker top edged a high ball into the air where M Atkinson took the catch with Walker out for 35, and Gwatkin claiming his first wicket of a very accurate spell of bowling.
Then with overs going fast and the bolwing still extremely tight from Hodge, Gwatkin and Melville-Ross panic crept into the Nowton team and a fear of hitting out to increase the very slow run rate.
With the old master Richards back to his very best on one end wiped up the tail with 3 wickets in 4 overs for 4 runs and Nowton were all out for 112 in the 37th over.
HCCC opened with Hodge and M Atkinson and runs were very hard to come by and Nowton were bowling very accurately not giving much away but a patient partnership and taking every run possible got the HCCC innings to 38 before M Atkinson was caught, Bryant came in and out swiftly but scored 11 quick runs before Hodge played on and was out for 27 and the total on 48.
Captain Roberts came in with Melville-Ross and played a captains innings with sensible batting and the odd excursion of big hitting was the key partnership which took the game to HCCC before Roberts was out for 34 leaving the arena with the score on 105 with Richards hitting the winning runs and securing the twenty points for the loss of 6 wickets.
A sweet victory which answers the question of how did we come up with Nowton last season as they asked on the away game, perhaps the question has been answerd with interest as this was there first visit to the HCCC ground in two seasons where the reneged on a swap of fixtures where HCCC were unbeaten at Home, perhaps the question should be how did Nowton come up with Hartest and Coldham Hall Cricket Club.

A huge relief that the pitch was playable after all the rain of the last week. Thanks to Pete for the last minute mowing etc. Thanks also goes to Rupert for arriving at short notice after a mix-up over selection.
Good tight bowling from all was once again the main reason for this enjoyable victory.
Tuddenham next week - can we make it 5 from 5? Hope so...........
