Exhilarating Last Ball Victory Over Brockley

H&CHCC 204 FOR 9

James 48, Roberts 24, B Atkinson 23

Brockley 201 for 8

H&CHCC Won by 3 Runs

Captain Roberts won the toss and choose to bat on a warm and cloudy but then cold day with the odd burst of rain but not enough to take the players off.

First appearance of Henry James who managed to get to the game on time after finding the H&CHCC pitch quickly changed and opened the batting with Hodge.

A great and steady start to build the foundation of the team score was going well until Hodge was bowled for 14 but the score on 43 for the first wicket.

After drinks at 20 overs James was finally bowled for a superb 48 and quickly followed by Vice Captain Bryant for 15.

Captain Roberts and B Atkinson scored freely to some indifferent second line bowling with B Atkinson scoring 23 including the biggest six of the day before being bowled and Captain Roberts 2 big sixes in successive balls to him to 24 before he was caught.

Richards and Gwatkin came and went quite quickly and H&CHCC were collapsing fast 160 for 7 in only 31 overs.

Stephen Dunn first game this season was joined by the batting coach who quickly explained to the team every week to bat out the overs and tried to do so with the tail with the opening bowler Jones returning and getting the wicket of Dunn.

Hannan joined M Atkinson and view 200 as a target for the batting point and a score that should have been made earlier and with some cautious batting and good running until M Atkinson took one risk to many to leave the arena with the score on 199 for 9.

Enter Walton a stone wall number eleven who survived the last ball of the over and Hannan got not only the run for 200 but Walton got one and Hannan another three which would prove to be crucial in the final result and ended not out 13 and a total of 204 for 9.

After tea Brockley started very briskly indeed with runs flowing above the rate required with Kearney dancing down the wicket in fine form and hitting most balls for runs with support from Meekings before he was bowled out by Gwatkin for 28 and the score on 60 for 1.

A young batsman came in but did not stay long before Hodge bowled him for 2 and James Jones came in who had bowled well also went on to bat well with Kearney and still above the required rate again looked threatening.

Captain Roberts went to the experienced guile of Peter Richards who has been plagued with injury this season but his first bowl of the season proved to be one of many pivotal moments in the game it was Richards who got the wicket of the dangerous Kearney for 55 after a catch by Roberts and then two experienced batsmen were in at the crease and again the pendulum swung to Brockley with Jones and Bugg scoring well but when Roberts who came on to bowl took a very good catch low down off his bowling and the score on 164 Jones departed for 42.

Bugg was joined by first team player Hill and with 4 overs to go and 20 required Bugg skied one to Roberts and there was an end open with the tail coming in.

Hill tried to force the issue with a big six and in the 39th over another defining moment arrived with the last ball of the over and Crysell on strike hit a cover drive out to Walton and with Hill wanting to run two so he could get back to the other end and a great throw from Walton was run out for a quick fire 26 and with one over to go Brockley needed 8 to win.

Roberts bowled well with nearly every player on the boundary and Crysell being caught the last ball to be bowled to the new batsmen R Meekings needed 4 to win as the scores would be level but Brockley would have won with less wickets being lost however they only managed a single and lost by 3 runs in a very exciting game of cricket.

All the players played there part in this home victory Brockley gave the man of the match award to Henry James and well deserved.

Brockley would not have won by virtue of losing fewer wickets. Wickets bear no relevance in the total.

A great effort from all concerned yesterday saw a close fought game end in victory. It was very pleasing to see everyone chip in with a telling contribution.

On a seperate note, I know that we did not exactly see eye to eye yesterday. Firstly Ben came to bat before Pete. Now there is no doubt that on ability alone Ben would bat higher than Pete. However Pete owns the pitch and looks after the pitch and loves batting...........
Secondly, I understand that Ben wanted to stand up to the big hitting batsman yesterday, and I understand the reasons why. There are ways to ask i.e. once and once only. The reasons why I don't think it is a good idea are threefold; firstly, the bowling is not accurate enough; secondly, the pitch has uneven bounce and thirdly, I think Ben's keeping is a year or so away from standing up and not conceeding bye's. Believe me I do weigh up all options and make a decision but I can't stand being asked the same thing over and over.
Whilst I am having my rant I might as well mention my 2 pet hates.....
1) trying to get the team to the field after tea.
2) reminding the team to have the courtesy to clap the incoming batsman.

You are both good cricketers and great members of the team. Lets all pull in the same direction and we will be suprised what we can do as a team.
Anyhow it was a great result and a hard fought game.
See you Sun
