Swift 34, Brinkley 27
Moriarty 4 for 19,
H&CHCC 143 for 2
Bryant 60, Hodge 35 Not Out
H&CHCC Won by 8 Wickets
On a very windy but sunny day Captain Roberts lost the toss and Brettenham decided to bat.
With big scores behind them last week Brettenham soon started hitting the ball and boundaries were coming quite quickly with a lightening outfield.
The only exception was Raisterick who was caught by B Atkinson off the bowling of Walton.
Holland and Barker were not hanging around it was like watch H&CHCC with similar result as perhaps one of the catches of the season by Hannan running over the shoulder catch in strong winds caught the very dangerous looking Holland off the bowling of Walton for 19 in only the 7th over.
Another defining moment was Hodge caught and bowled Barker who scored 136 the week before but not today only 15 and as if lightening does not strike twice it did with Hodge catching off his own bowling the south African over seas player Botha for 13.
Brettenham regrouped with Swift and Brinkley who slowly but steadily used up some overs and took the score from 67 to 107 before Hannan like Hodge took another high hanging catch in high winds to get Swift out for 34.
Moriarty who was late due to the fact he was at the wrong ground and could not find that one either got in with the act with straight steady bowling and when he got Brinkley LBW for 27 the collapse with nearing completion as Moriarty finally bowled the last man out the Brettenham innings ended on 142 all out in the 34th over very much short of using the 40 overs.
The fielding was exceptional indeed with all but one catch being taken but a very good run out by Bryant and keeping by B Atkinson whose glove work all game was very good. The team’s performance in the field and tight bowling with some erratic batting with poor shot selection kept the score down on a good batting track with a fast outfield.
Hodge and Ralling opened the batting and after a stop start season Ralling got off to a confident start with a brisk 18 before being bowled but Brinkley but a good start had been secured with 29 for 1.
Vice Captain Billy Bryant entered the fray and his innings blew away the opposition with his hard hitting style that more often than not does not come off but boy oh boy it did today with his hitting everything including 23 off one shell shocked bowler included three big sixes in his innings of 60 before he was bowled but by then the game had long gone from Brettenham at 120 for 2.
Captain Roberts and the ever dependable Hodge’s anchor role saw the mighty H&CHCC home inside 20 overs and winning the game by 8 wickets but although the score suggests a one sided game it was obvious that Brettenham are a far better side than there performance today and makes the victory such a good one.
Brettenham as a footnote were one of the best sides for being very friendly and competitive teams we have played lately marked in how long and well they were in the Lawshall swan with all the team chatting and getting on with each other. As I said earlier in the report than Brettenham were very much like H&CHCC enough said.
