Brockley 217 for 6
Joe Reed 107, Moriarty 3 for 35,
Hartest & Coldham 158 all out
Roberts 59 Joe Reed 5 for 55
As you can see from the score in the first game of the season Hartest & Coldham Hall put up a sterling effort for there first game of the season.
Joe Reed who arrived late to the game and went into bat shortly after his arrival gave two chances early on that probably later in the season could well have been taken were on this occasion dropped.
He went on to score a 107 and made the difference as Brockley were 96 for 4 but with Reed hitting 7 sixes and 9 fours got Brockley up to 217 with Fisher next highest scorer with 25 not out.
Today saw Captain Bryant take charge of his first match and with all the team and supporters on time Brockley turned up late thinking it was a 2 pm start when in fact it was 1.30 and in a roundabout way claimed the toss and put them into bat which initially worked except for the
catches and Reed getting a ton.
After tea Hartest and Coldham set about the chase and after losing Hannan for 7 early on Roberts and Hodge put on 62 and well above the scoring rate required.
Hodge though was bowled to a slightly quicker delivery for 23 and Ben Atkinson scored quickly before that man Reed took a low catch off his own bowling to dismiss him for 15.
In fact I am not sure if Hartest & Coldham were playing Brockley or just Joe Reed he seemed a one man team as he took three caught and bowled along with two other wickets ending on 5 wickets although Roberts did take a shine to his unorthodox bowling by hitting four sixes in his magnificent score of 59 before being caught of course in the deep.
Two debut boys today Henry Macilwaine & Dave Armstrong both had steady starts to there Hartest & Coldham careers with Macilwaine keeping and scoring 12 including a big six.
Dave Armstrong fielded very well and bowled 5 overs for 23 getting the long overdue wicket of Reed and both I am sure will feature in future games as well as Jack Armstrong a good bowler to work along side Gus Walton who if had a bit more luck would have had a few more wickets than the 2 for 39 he got in the game.
Moriarty probably gave Roberts a man of match second place with very good bowling 3 for 35 and not out in his 18 towards the end of the Hartest & Coldham innings it must be the new thigh pad, gloves and pants he tells us!
Hartest and Coldham last man was the very luckless Nick Rutter who was ran out for nought which probably summed up his day but next week it will be someone else and the one thing that Hartest and Coldham do well is socialize in the club house after the game where the banter never stops but all in good fun.
Typical of most seasons that Hartest & Coldham do historically lose there opening game and an away fixture to boot but with three home games coming up and the rusty pre season now out of the system let the games begin!
Captain Bryant first game was not a success but it will not be for long or lack of trying and probably glad to get the first game over with.
Next week the first Home game against Tuddenham - bring it on!
