Hartest & Coldham Hall Win First Game in Tight Finish

H&CHCC 121 All Out

Bryant 55, Hodge 25

Edwardstone 110 All Out

Hodge 5 for 17

Hartest & Coldham Hall CC won there first game of the season in a tight game that looked beyond them but they found the steel and determination to take there chance in securing the victory from the jaws of defeat.

Captain Bryant won the toss and decided to bat which seemed a good idea but with bowlers on top for most of the entire match it looked like the wrong decision especially with the wickets of Hannan , B Atkinson and Moriarty all going cheaply leaving the score on 25 for 3 after 10 overs.

Captain Bryant joined Hodge who had opened and battled against a lively attack on a wicket that certainly gave the bowlers a lot to keep there interest up was fighting hard with superb concentration to keep Hartest and Coldham in the game as it looked like Edwardstone could easily run through the team.

Bryant in his own style and the slice of luck we all need sometimes went with his fortune favours the brave attitude mixed in with his responsibility of Captain and the situation the team found themselves in battered the ball in all directions.

In the twelve and a half overs Hodge and Bryant put on 70 partnership with Bryant who was getting under the skin of Edwardstone so much so a unsavoury incident of some spitting was ignored by Bryant much to his credit.

Bryant was finally caught for 55 only adding 1 more run as Hodge had also returned to the pavilion less than an over before scoring 25.

Three more quick wickets fell before the ever improving Gus Walton scored a very valuable 11 runs with a mini partnership with Peter Richards of 19 and with Rutter the last wicket falling left Richards not out on 9 with the team total of 121 and looking very short indeed.

After tea J Armstrong opened with Walton and although bowling well the runs were coming but not particularly fast and had reached 19 before Richards took a very good catch with the sun in his eyes to dismiss Gooderham for 9.

Hodge came onto bowl and two wickets fell with the score on 40 and Edwardstone still seemed well in control with overs and wickets in reserve but perhaps it was to easy or as the belief and steel to see a chance and taking it was beginning to occur as B Atkinson took a catch again of Hodge leaving Edwardstone 51 for 5.

D Armstrong came onto bowl after Moriarty was finding no luck today and tied down one end with Hodge threatening but seemingly not getting the break through and the score reaching 86 for 5 and only needing 35 runs with 15 overs left two wickets fell with the score on 86 to Hodge leaving the game on a knifes edge.

Runs were becoming hard to get with a combination of good bowling and great ground fielding when D Armstrong who had bowled very well got his first wicket with a potential match winning catch by Niall "safe hands" Hannan took a great catch running back over his head exposing the tail of Edwardstone who now were looking for J Henderson to see them through who had ground out an innings of time but not many runs being well shackled by D Armstrong.

The Armstrong and Hannan combination worked again less than two overs later to bring the score to 108 for 9 and with Walton coming back into the fray took the final wicket by catching Clark off his own bowling and to secure Hartest and Coldham first win of the season also giving Captain Bryant his first win as Captain.

After being on the end of some close defeats where the man of the match had been on the opposition team this week the team played well with all players playing there part and the celebration and happy dressing room was very much needed.

Next week Earl Stonham come the Oval and Hartest and Coldham Hall will look to carry on the good work and bring the wins and losses equal now they have found there steel again.
