H&CHCC Slump to another Defeat aganst Haverhill

Haverhill 215 for 9

Sullivan 94.

H&CHCC 115 All Out

Hodge 55,B Atkinson 17,

Haverhill won by 100 runs.

Captain Bryant won the toss and decided to bat against high flying Haverhill who had a strong team out and there was early evidence of the very solid if not slow start made by Haverhill with some of there own players slating the opening pair of Proctor and Sullivan on a decent batting track.

In the 18th over the first break through came from J Armstrong having Proctor caught smartly by Hannan at square leg for 17.

Sullivan and Dingley started the Haverhill innings much more in earnest and moved the score quickly onto 112 before Dingley was bowled by Moriarty in his second spell for 19.

H&CHCC bowled well with a slight feeling of the inevitable was about to happen that Haverhill would post a big score and they did with the help of six drop catches and with a lot of if and buts
who knows perhaps the score may have been more manageable.

Towards the end of the innings with Haverhill pushing on and Sulivan hitting some huge sixes losing the ball twice the wily experienced bowler P Richards entered the fray taking 3 for 17 in three overs and could easily won the man of the match for Hartest with the exception of a batting performance from Hodge and the fact four catches were off Hodge who ended up without a wicket after a tidy 10 over spell in some searing heat.

Woodley was run out on the last ball of the innings and Haverhill finished with a very creditable 215 for 9 with help of the lack of catches being held the overall ground work was OK but perhaps some belief was missing in the field which needs to be eradicated as soon as possible starting next week at Brettenham.

Hodge and Hannan opened and again the opening pair started steady and got a foundation but the urgency from the side lines forced an error to young Hannan who was subsequently bowled for 8 in a partnership of 32 in the twelfth over.

Roberts and Hodge moved the score onto 58 when Roberts skied one deep to mid off and was caught for a quick fire 10.

Hodge was batting with a return to form which was very welcome was joined by B Atkinson and between them put on the biggest partnership of the H&CHCC innings of 37 with B Atkinson getting a start but was bowled out to a very good spell of bowling from D Poole who was causing a lot of problems for most of the batsmen that faced him getting Atkinson for 17.

Hodge who got to his well deserved 50 with a big six was soon to follow B Atkinson back to the pavilion with another spinner on also moving the ball greatly and Hodge was bowled for a very good 55 but leaving any chance of winning long gone on 102 for 5.

The last 5 wickets fell with only 13 runs being added and only Gus Walton looking in reasonable fettle left high and dry on 10 not out as he saw the collapse of the H&CHCC innings to 155 all out.

The bowling of Poole ending with figures of 7 for 28 runs and no doubt his best ever figures something for him to remember from the game but the rest of the H&CHCC will not have a lot to remember from it.

The H&CHCC Bowling and fielding is normally very good although this season has seen a few catches go down which does not help but cricket is a batsmen game and the overall reason for defeats has simply been the lack of runs and that unhappy equation needs to be adjusted fast if H&CHCC wants to climb off the foot of the table.
