Walton 3 - 27, J Armstrong 1 - 44
H&CHCC 95 All Out
J Armstrong 27, Bryant 17, M Atkinson 14,
Barker 7 - 37, Blyth 2 - 44,
The form book suggested it was going to be very tough against Brettenham who are champions elect losing once all season back in April plus a H&CHCC side ravaged with Harvesting commitments leaving Captain Bryant full of bowlers but very short of top order batsmen so it was no surprise when winning the toss he put 10 man Brettenham into bat first.
Ormes with Blyth opened the innings and you can tell they had a certain quality about them that will be tested at a higher league next season however the H&CHCC did themselves proud with some keen fast bowling from Jack Armstrong and Gus Walton keeping the scoring rate down to a minimum.
With 69 on the board the much missed John Moriarty back from minor surgery on his back got Ormes out LBW for 39 a welcome return who has missed a lot of the season through injury.
Barker came in who had put H&CHCC to the sword earlier in the season and did not hang about trying to hit everything with some degree of success as he was dropped twice on his way to a quick fire fifty including three sixes but Jack Armstrong got his reward with his fine bowling spell when Barker got an under edge to wicket keeper Mark Atkinson who held onto a good catch.
The score was 158 for two when Barker left and this brought a mini collapse with overs running out Walton returned for his second spell with an accurate spell soon claiming Brinkley for two comprehensively bowling him out.
Nick Rutter came on with the spin element and in his second over bowled a startled Moyneham who thought the Keeper had stumped him not realising the king of spin had spun his web and bowled him out.
Wickets were falling with Rutter & Walton getting through the tail with one wicket left to get H&CHCC got all the bowling points on offer when swift Peter Richards threw in a ball which gave Nick Rutter the simplest of run outs to end the Brettenham innings on 192.
Teas were today by Ms Bryant & Copping which were as ALL SEASON from all the Ladies & Gentlemen have been excellent which is fantastically appreciated by the home team plus all the away teams having sampled most away teams this season I can confirm without bias or hesitation the teas at H&CHCC are as Tina Turner sung "Simply the Best" so a big Thank you to you all plus the help that everyone does when that work is going on from washing up to getting the plates just great stuff you win promotion every year sadly the players can't quite match up to it but we try!
The run chase looked a big one with make shift opener Mark Atkinson opening with Niall Hannan soon found that the main two protagonists in the batting were also the opening bowlers who were pretty useful making the old ball swing every which way but loose!
With unlucky 13 on the board Hannan got a ball which cannoned of his pads onto his stumps he was out for 6 bringing in Captain Bryant who was dropped twice playing the way he plays but picking up a few runs which were not easy to come by and survival let alone run chase was difficult.
The partnership was brought to an end as Mark Atkinson got the swinging ball Blyth had been searching for clipping top of off stump his [as it turned out to be] long vigil at the crease in his make shift new position was over for 14 in 34 minutes. [yep the longest stay]
Bryant was dropped again and the inform Richards was bowled round his legs for two before Bryant luck also ran out when caught behind the worst fears were coming true with perhaps not the strongest batting line up the game had slipped away rapidly with both Faires 4, Copping 0, only John Moriarty stayed moving onto eight before his demise being bowled by the relentless Barker claiming his fifth wicket and looking hungry for more.
Jack Armstrong joined Gus Walton however Walton was support to Jack Armstrong who when for some shots with fortune favours the brave getting a few runs when Walton was also bowled by Barker and out came Daddy Armstrong said hello to Jack and a ball later came back again.
Last man Nick Rutter came out at 60 for 9 in 17 overs staved off the hatrick ball with confidence plus his two wickets earlier was not going to lie down easily even though Brettenham knew the points were in the bag and Jack Armstrong was hitting out and rotating the strike with Rutter fending off when needed although the quick singles were challenging to Rutter he stuck in there getting a few runs himself.
The pair had put on the longest partnership of 35 getting the H&CHCC score to 95 when a big swing and miss by Jack Armstrong led him to be stumped for a very good 27 runs with Nick Rutter not out six.
Brettenham will probably be worthy champions however a lot relies on very few players but that is their problem however the Brettenham team and manor of how they played the game was a credit which made it a fun enjoyable game.
