Hammered at Haverhill

Haverhill CC  315 for 7

Rutter 3-42.

Hartest and Coldham Hall CC  127 all out.

R Carter 33, M Roberts 26, Josh Borley 24

On the longest day that theme continued when the skipper lost the toss and Haverhill decided to bat, and with Hartest and Coldham Hall having a late call off plus some of the team travelling back from Leeds the Hartest boys took to the field with just 8 players.

After five overs on a lovely track to bat the home team had accrued 47 runs and when the 3 amigos turned up and entered the fray the score was 57 for one, the one wicket falling to Charlie Long.

The day belonged to T Bali who at 15 years old played well against some indifferent bowling perhaps today was not the best we have done but the young lad scored runs on anything that was loose, going onto make 131 before the spin king Nick Rutter caught him out caught behind by Josh Borley.

It was difficult day for the boys with runs a plenty, the ball was past you it normally ran away to the boundary, a few sixes on the short side as well plus a few deep ones behind the bowlers head on occasions.

Mark Roberts bowled well but his spin when the home team were accelerating took some stick however must commend his never say die attitude plus he was on the unfortunate side of a couple of drop catches however by the time they arrived the damaged had long been done.

Charlie Long field very well on numerous occasions as did a old familiar face of Jordan Marlow, it was very good to see him back plus very good fielding and took a catch deep on the boundary.

Generally the fielding was decent but the score book did not make pleasant reading but 3 wickets from Roberts and the three wickets from Nick Rutter who had control and kept the runs down kept the spirits up as the innings came to a close at 315 for 7.

After tea a new opening partnership with Vice Captain Richard Carter and Josh Borley went into bat for the reply which was in all truthfulness beyond chasing unless the team had a miracle up its sleeve as the tiring fielding had also taken effect plus a huge run rate to chase.

However Carter and Borley did not disgrace themselves with steady play and then getting bolder hitting a few fours plus for Josh his first Six for Hartest and Coldham, not to be out done Carter also chipped in with one.

The Haverhill Captain knew the game was his and rotated his bowlers around quite frequently, sadly the partnership didn't quite get to 50 just one run short when Borley was caught deep square leg for one of his best scores 24.

The Captain fresh from winning his award for Player of the month was cursed as he hit his first ball for four, clipped another which the keeper let by but the silly old umpire gave byes [me, I gave what I thought I saw] but third ball was cleaned bowled by Ewens.

The inevitable collapse began with the exception of Roberts who bashed his was to a good 26 runs hitting a couple of sixes along the way but sadly was caught as the wickets began to tumble.

The tail crumbled not immediately but steady with nobody else getting to double figures but did pass 125 for that extra batting point but when man of match Rutter got a fine edge and walked the game was over.

The winning margin was 188 and it was a long day but some notable performances in the field and some bits with the bat, next week we are at home to Cavendish and hopefully get back to familiar surroundings and put in a competitive performance, hopefully with one or two key players to return to the fold.
