Hartest &Coldham Hall Cricket Club 2010 Awards Evening
Held at the Farmers Club Bury St Edmunds
Thank you and well done evening was held at the Farmers Club in Bury St Edmunds for Hartest & Coldham Hall Cricket awards for the 2010 season in front of a forty plus crowd the evening turned out to be a huge success with lots of fun banter and a lovely meal.
After the main meal Chairman of the club Mr John Ralling stood up to address the masses and of course gave a eloquent speech of how the club has moved on with Websites, prestigious evenings and even laptops which raised a laugh from the well oiled crowd.
John epitomised the club for what it likes to stand for, good teas, no brilliant teas fun and we do not roll over every time as the fact the team finished a very creditable fourth in the table but more than that spoke of how the people within the club made the club full of very decent people and well done John we are pleased your our Chairman.
At this point I believe we wish John congratulations as Fiona is adding to the Ralling household to join increase numbers for the club's crèche and company for young Peter but he is not alone in this feat as John Moriarty even though missing a bit of the season with a bad back [perhaps we know why now?] has with his lovely lady Emma also adding to the Hartest & Coldham numbers due in February so we wish both well and many congratulations' to both couples.
Captain William Bryant then took to the floor and at this point before you get bored reading this long piece a hearty big fat well done for organising the evening plus the whole season with his enthusiasm and love of the club gave a lot of people a very good evening so well done to him as I said earlier it is a word which will crop up a lot today all thoroughly deserved when it does.
The Captain spoke of his thanks to the legendary teas which I think the high praise came when six out of nine Captain's on going out to the toss mentioned the teas they were looking forward to and well that is just unheard of so that is probably the biggest and best compliment all the ladies, gents, sons, daughters, grandma's and all I have missed could possibly have, as Tina Turner sung, "Simply the Best"
He then went on to thank the entire Richards family for the best cricket pitch ever and the amount of work that goes into to it with Peter and son Jake with the valued support of his good lady wife Kate supporting him in his quest to produce top wickets in all conditions well done and thank you.
Billy then went on to thank the sponsors, Phil from the Bush public house, Ron & Margaret, and some new players Matt Hoadley plus the return of Shaun Faiers after a good few years out in the wilderness at this point I wish I was taking notes so if I forget to mention anyone please forgive me everybody contributes which defines the word Team which we are such people.
The Captain handed over to vice Captain Gus Walton who missed the start of the season when a girlie knocked him over, yep that's what I am thinking as well however he spoke very well about the club and mentioned the Webmaster taking the gloves plus the website and how his young bowling colleague Jack Armstrong had come on well this season it was to some senior players that the likes of Gus, Jack, Ben & Niall helped the club in a difficult time when the boys joined as 15 year olds to which is was very apparent that these young boys have now become young men to which their parents plus the cricket team can be proud to be playing with, well done Gus and the rest of the young ones. However it was a dodgy shirt Gus and a Ker-ching a definite fine.
Ron Speakman was next and a regular supporter with his wife comes to as many games to support the team. When he watches the games he takes photographs which he very kindly put in an album to donate to the club with the aid of the new Website those pictures will be on display so anybody who did not see them on the night or could not make the ceremony will still have a chance to see them which were well worth looking at and a very kind gesture from the Speakman's.
Next came statto who should get out more but with half his thunder already mentioned he managed to at least surprise a few people including Jack Armstrong when he told him of the 12 miles & 174 yards he did running into the wicket to bowl excluding any no balls or wides plus the 12 miles back to the start of his run up but as said by Peter Richards he was walking back so much easier. One last stat was the team average on the whole season which was 18 so perhaps a target to aim at for all the players next year if we did do it we would be Champions for sure.
Ten months ago the previous awards the new honours board was donated by Gus Walton's Dad who unveiled a blank board however after this season's exertions he whipped off a blanket to reveal 7 different names on the board again pictures of who and what they did will appear on the new website well done to those who got on their this season let's hope for many more to come.
Phil from The Bush Public House who was guest of honour for putting up with the team after home games and no doubt will feel much more part of the set up after the good night he had and one of his duties was the draw tickets which were superbly sold by Gus who had not done it before and it showed however his naivety managed to sell more plus plenty of car stickers. The Captain got the draw moving fast with over 20 prizes given out with some winning two prizes putting them back in for a re draw again fund raising is a very important these days to keep the club afloat for things that maybe required maintenance wise.
Then the final part of the evening some awards given out by Phil after a few words from the Captain the first was to the scorer Judith Atkinson with a lovely bouquet of flowers but her camera shy will not see her on the new website but a good close up of the flowers.
The Captain then proudly awarded the two centurions miniature cricket bats which are traditionally given when such a feat has been achieved the awards went to Mark Roberts 146 not out against Thurston then David Hodge 113 not out against BSSSC two superb knocks which fully deserved their awards to warm applause from their team mates and partners.
Then fielder of the year went to Mark Atkinson for his exploits behind the stumps which was also gratefully received with a bottle of Champagne given to him.
Matt Hoadley was recognised with a trophy for some great performances with the ball plus some good batting but with Matt only playing so few games could not qualify for the top awards however we hope he comes back next season to play competitive cricket and claim them next time we all wish he would as not only a good cricketer he is a very good guy and fits in very well with the rest of the team ethos.
Kris Notley who again was another loyal supporter following the club and taken many photographs with video plus taken the Website onto another professional level was awarded a bottle of Champagne we will discuss the website a bit later in the night's proceedings.
The Champagne moment was voted by senior members of the team as Captain Billy made I believe a slight error in which match but as it was the same player the award went to Shaun Faiers when under some considerable pressure in the match against his home village as a boy with only his second game of the season and about eighteen years off the back of a duck the previous week he hit a four to win the game and gave his team mates great satisfaction in the win plus now picking up the Champagne moment of the year well done Shaun.
Then the main awards for bowling the runner up who had a super season got better and better richly deserved his trophy was Jack Armstrong who again as most people throughout the night got a great reception picking up his award from Phil The Publican of the Bush in Shimpling [Can I plug this anymore than I have?].
The winner was announced as bowler of the Year Nick Rutter to great applause but like great super stars he could not be with us tonight but great credit to the Captain who with a small party went to his place of work and presented him with the award to his great surprise shock plus a big amount of emotion receiving this award I suspect his first ever big award in his cricketing life a shame he could not be with us to collect it but I am very positive his mobile had a melt down at the very moment after it had been announced well done Nick Rutter bowler of the year!
Batting award well the runner up again was the indomitable Mark Roberts who collected his award with such dignity saying for the record " I hate David Hodge" to the roar of laughter in the good spirit it was meant the reason of course was obvious to the players that the winner of the batsman of the year was of course the great David Hodge a deserved winner and all round great guy I have run out of superlatives to describe him but those who know and play with him could not wish for a better player to play cricket with well done to Batsmen of the Year David Hodge.
Phil the Pub landlord of The Bush Public house then mentioned his own work to raise money for the St Nicholas Hospice a great charity and a fire walk with fire eaters at the Bush Public House to which Gus Walton put himself forward to walk the coals but then like his raffle ticket selling got round the room to sponsor him raising a superb £200.00 on the night so please contact him as he hot foots it across the coals to raise money for a worthwhile cause well done The Bush and our own Gus Walton who sadly will miss most of next season as he travels the world to spread the name of Hartest & Coldham Hall Cricket Club as our ambassador to the club, safe travelling see you in the coco the clown outfit again soon, well done Gus Walton.
Last but one on was Kris Notley the welsh wizard who has taken on the website to a much higher level than this one he has put a lot of work in and will do in the future it is a time consuming thing but as the Chairman mentioned the communication it brings to keep people in touch and a place of what's going on who to call is all there plus now even more with lots of photographs of all the players, partners, kids, dogs, cats, sheep?? well you get the idea so this Webmaster steps down to do the match reports help Kris where I can if he needs help but under the role of reporter, statto, and just another one to click onto the best site in the world.
Captain William Bryant finished the evening with a few more words of thanks and looking forward to do all the things again with that same spirit for the new season 2011.
Conclusion a hugely successful night was had and tremendous work from Billy without doubt Georgie's help behind the scenes well done as for me my new identity will be.....................
