Haverhill Match Report Away 30th August 2009

H&CHCC 158 ALL OUT

Bryant 43, Roberts 26,

Haverhill 160 for 0

Sullivan 76 Not Out, A Wigan 70 Not Out

In a highly charged controversial game where it seems winning is the be all and end all where honestly with dignity seems to be sadly left behind the game of cricket came a poor second in today's fixture.

Hartest and Coldham Hall Cricket Club already relegated took on the event league winners Haverhill and winning the toss decided to bat.

Only Captain Bryant and Roberts really getting a decent score at the top of the order and wickets were being taken on regular intervals with only 24 being the biggest partnership.

As usual the tail end again contributed with a notable 18 from D Armstrong and 15 from Dan Thorp.

Nick Rutter was putting in a sterling effort scoring 14 not out but ran out of partners which left H&CHCC all out for 158.

The controversy came at the start of the Haverhill innings when a clear nick off the bat was caught by Captain Bryant and the batsman was walking at least 4 to 5 paces when he noticed the umpire was not giving anything so turned around and walked back to face the next ball.

The result was unlikely to change as Haverhill are probably worthy Champions on paper but I fear they would be at the other end of the spectrum if the game was on sportsmanship.

However there victory was very shallow and left a few of the team frustrated and it was "just not cricket" but we will not be facing them again for a while so it was not all bad news.
